Her heritage is Mexican-American and is American by citizenship. Since she was a child she has had a strong desire to participate in activities. Gerina began to play golf when she was fifteen. Gerina attended Goddard High School for her higher education in high school. In high school she won New Mexico's state golf tournament. Also, she was a volleyball player and competed on the level of state. She attended Texas's University of Texas, Texas, for the 2003 academic year. As a senior she was a winner of every tournament which she participated in. While in her undergrad year, she received as the conference's best player of year as well as UTEP Female Athletic Champion of the Year.
