Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi, the Romanian gymnastics instructor, who later became the coach for Comaneci who first came across Comaneci when she was just six years old. She first competed at the championships for juniors from Romania in 1969 she placed 13th. In 1970, she was crowned champion. In her 1972 first international event that was an preolympics junior event for countries in the Communist bloc, she won 3 gold medals. In 1973 and 1975, she won named the all-around Junior Champion. At her first competitive event in senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva of Russia won five gold medals, as well with one silver. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first female to do the backward double salto in an unmounting from uneven bars that are parallel. In her teens she began her career in the entertainment business performing as a figure skater. Along with her younger twin brother Nina Wayne she was part of a traveling show called Ice Capades. Carol Marie Wayne is a American citizen who was born on September 6 1942 in Chicago Illinois. Carol started her career in entertainment as a teenager. Her first professional gig was figure skating alongside Nina Wayne, her younger sister as part of traveling entertainment show Ice Capades. The show featured dramatic ice skating shows.
